Vasili Arkhipov is famous as the senior officer who perhaps averted the outbreak of Nuclear conflict during the height of the Cold War. As a catpain aboard the B-59 submarine near Cuba, Arkhipov was the dissenting vote who refused to vote to release the kilotonne nuclear torpedo that his two senior officers wanted to deploy. His decision perhaps averted what would have been the most devastating of conflicts. His heroism and ability to resist the due tension is remembered.
